HUMILITY -  the quality or state of not thinking you are better than other people.

Humility is a very difficult concept to understand sometimes.  It is within our nature to want to be really good at something and then to share that with others.  God tells us to be humble or to have humility as not one of us has been created “better” than anyone else.  This does not mean that we are all equally good at everything, it just means that in the whole picture, when compared to God, we all fall very short of  His greatness.

We say the term “Pil Seung” over and over again in class.  Let’s remember what this means.  The actual translation of Pil Seung is “certain victory”, but we are reminded that to us, this means to “always do our best and never give up”.  I, and the instructors here at HCMA, will NEVER compare one student to another.  God has gifted each of us with different strengths and weaknesses and we are to continue working on both of these at all times.  We will push you to do “your” best (especially if we know you can do better than you may be doing), but we also understand that everyone has “off” days every once in a while.ith this being said, I want all of you to work very hard on your own improvements and if you can help someone else improve (without distracting from class) you are encouraged to do this as well.  I want us all to work this year on making sure we watch what we say and how we act.  In other words, it would really sadden me to hear anyone saying things like, “You need to go move over because I am a higher rank and better than you.”  Instead you might say, if you are trying to help a lower rank student line up, “Remember in class we line up by rank because it helps us all learn better this way.  Your spot would be here” (and then show the student where to go).  It is really discouraging to others when we boast about how good we are at something.  For instance, when someone continually says, “I am so much faster than …”, or “I am so much stronger than…”, “I am better than…”.   None of these thing help to lift other students up and should not be said.  We are all in HCMA to obtain Optimum Health, Self-Defense, and Personal Growth, so let’s all work together to help each other grow in these areas!  Pil Seung!
