MR. OLIVER WHITE began his Martial Arts Journey in March 2021 - He earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in June 2025
I’ve had a fun path through this black belt journey. When I first started, I gained strength, confidence, and self-control with each belt. When I broke my arm I had to persevere through everything and all that came at me. Then in January, I fractured my foot and was in a cast for a month, followed by a boot for 2 months. This unexpected detour pushed my testing for another 3 months, but helped me develop lots of patience. Overall, I plan to continue going forward in Martial Arts and get better everyday striving for my goals.
– Oliver White
Oliver, It has been an absolute pleasure watching you grow in confidence as you've gone through your journey toward a First Degree Black Belt. When you started four years ago, our hope for you was to be part of a great community, learn some amazing skills, and experience a healthy sense of pride in your accomplishments along the way. With each belt, I saw a young man who accepted challenges and made it his goal to get stronger. There were many times early on when your heart wasn't in it, but you stuck with it and realized how much you were learning. It's been fun watching you spar with veteran classmates and then leave class energized. When you challenge yourself, the determination that shows up in you is unstoppable! We love you, support you, and will be right there with you every step of the way. Remember to always "commit your actions to the LORD, and your plans will succeed" (Prov. 16:3 NLT).
Love, Dad, Mom, Naomi, and Elli
MISS EVA DOANE began her Martial Arts Journey in August 2021 - She earned her 1st Degree Black Belt in June 2025
Higher Calling Martial Arts means so much to me. Mrs. Jackson has made a huge impact on my life because she is so strong and caring. She loves her students and the Lord and she is so patient. All of the principles of the school I hold close to my heart. All of the principles are important in their own ways. In classes, you need perseverance to keep going even when it is hard or it is hot in the dojang. Sometimes, I just want to give up but I don't because I have perseverance. I learned it from taking martial arts. Self-control is also very relevant in the dojang because you need self-control while doing defense drills with your partner. These skills are also important in life. I have also loved to assist in classes at Timothy Ministry. Assisting has taken my journey to a new level. It has elevated everything I know about martial arts because I learn while I assist. I also love the opportunity to watch people learn because martial arts is so empowering. The white belts I help are so eager to learn and I love that. I can't wait to earn my black belt because I have looked forward to getting it since day one. Just because I will achieve my goal of earning my black belt, doesn't mean I have not created new goals of helping other students and the school. I can't wait to keep learning new things."
– Miss Eva Doane
I cannot wait to see the smile on Eva's face when she earns her black belt. To my sweet girl, this accomplishment is about so much more than a belt. Martial arts has given her friendships with people of all ages, it gave her a mentor in Mrs. Jackson, and it gave her a drive to do something that was personally challenging. I marvel at the progress she has made. When she started, she was timid and unsure. Her punches and kicks were not effective. But, over the course of the last four years, I have seen my girl blossom into a strong and confident young lady. The opportunity she was given to assist was life-giving. She began to talk about the kids she helped and the lessons she learned. While I noticed her physical strength improving, I really saw her confidence soar. I recently started taking class with Eva and have been one of the students she helped and I have been so blessed by her patience and encouraging heart. She has become a lot like one of her personal heroes, Mrs. Jackson. I cannot wait to see how she used the principles she has embodied during her time at HCMA to see how they help her later in life.
- Mrs. Amanda Doane
MR. JASON DOANE began his Martial Arts Journey in August 2021 - He earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in June 2025
Martial Arts has been a big part of my life. Taking classes helped me with learn how to persevere. When I started taking classes, I couldn’t imagine getting my black belt, but perseverance made it possible. I like to take classes with Mrs. Jackson because she is a super-good teacher and a good role model. I like that she teaches her students about God and uses martial arts to help others. I want to continue to study martial arts and help in the school when I can.
– Mr. Jason Doane
Jason was the first of our children to take classes with HCMA and his siblings all quickly followed behind him. When he first started his black belt journey, he was always talking about the big kids who helped assist and how high they could kick and how strong they are. Now, he has grown up into one of the big kids with high kicks and a love for martial arts. As he has grown, so have his skills and his character. I’ve been most impressed with his willingness to push himself physically and come out of his shell a bit, too! I am grateful for the way martial arts has brought my children together and Jason encourages all of his siblings (and Mama) to do our best. I am very thankful to HMCA and Mrs. Jackson for helping to shape him into a man of character.
– Mrs. Amanda Doane
MR. EI DOANE began his Martial Arts Journey in August 2021 - He earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in June 2025
Martial arts has taught me so much. Not only have I learned the techniques, I have learned the principles of Higher Calling Martial Arts. My favorite principle is "Unbreakable Spirit" because it has taught me to never give up and to preserve in life, as well as in practice of martial arts. I have also loved getting to be an assistant because I like helping kids and watching their techniques progress. I have learned from the kids I assist and see small things they can improve and that helps me improve. I have learned a lot from Mrs. Jackson. She is a good teacher and has endless patience. It has been an incredible journey and I am excited to work towards "black belt and beyond!
– Mr. EI Doane
It has been an honor to watch Elijah on his journey to black belt. I have seen so much growth in him, not just in his coordination and confidence, but in his desire to serve others. Elijah, or "EI" as we call him, has worked diligently to master his kicks, punches, and dodges, but I also love his excitement to assist Mrs. Jackson with the younger kids. Martial arts has given him perspective about what it means to be a leader. As he has grown stronger, I know he is excited to see his hard work turn into stronger hits and more accurate kicks. While his physical strength has improved, it is more exciting to see the young man he is growing into. He has greater integrity, more self-control, and empathy for others. I am grateful for the way HCMA has helped shape him and shown him the importance of a great leader.
– Mrs. Amanda Doane
MR. EI DOANE began his Martial Arts Journey in August 2021 - He earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in June 2025
When I was seven years old, I bought a martial arts uniform off of Amazon with my own money. I really wanted to do martial arts because it was so cool. Later that year, my oldest brother joined HCMA and Mrs. Jackson let me use the online videos until I could start taking classes. I was able to take class online with my family and then take class at Timothy Ministry in person. Martial arts has taught me to have discipline and integrity. I think discipline is important because even when class is difficult, you have to keep going. I am grateful for Mrs. Jackson. She is a great, great teacher and a super kind person. I can't believe I have come this far and I have a dobak now!"
– Asher Doane
Like many things in our family, our youngest child was the one that led our family into our martial arts journey. He wanted to learn martial arts from the time he was a few years old. Some of my earliest memories of Asher are him pretending to do "karate" (as he called it) and his fierceness with his kicks and punches when he was still small. When his older brother joined HCMA, Asher could not wait to be in class with him. Soon, the whole family was on their journey. When I reflect on all the ways he has learned, I am most inspired by his discipline to keep going. I know it is hard to be the youngest in our family, but he kept pushing with strength
and determination to master his technique and skills. He loves martial arts even more now that he has the technique, strength, and endurance to do it well and I
am so grateful to have been able to watch him grow up doing something he loves.
– Mrs. Amanda Doane
MR. ELI SOMERS began his Martial Arts Journey in September 2020 - He earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in March 2025
Before my marital arts journey began, I was wondering what I would do with my life. In the meantime, my mom took my brothers to Higher Calling Martial Arts at Timothy Ministry. I would usually just sit in boredom while observing my brothers’ belt testing, but the more I watched, the more I began to gain interest. Eventually, mom signed me up. I looked around the room seeing people higher ranked than me, so I already knew I was in for a long ride to reach Black Belt. At first I felt like a nobody, but as I kept going, I began to feel more welcome and attached to Martial Arts. I realized that this was one of the best decisions I had ever made. After a while, I began to think that I did not need to just be the one having role models, but I could also be a role model to others. To prepare for Storm Team, I signed up for Black Belt Club, and once
I knew I was ready, I joined the Storm Team. After five years of working hard, gaining friends, and getting stronger, I am now ready to earn my Black Belt. No one ever said it would be easy, but there is no fun if there is no challenge.
– Eli Somers
Eli has grown so much throughout his martial arts journey. From the time he was a little boy, he has always internalized his emotions and been a very thoughtful, introspective kid. Martial arts has awakened his self-confidence and motivation. He has developed muscles, stamina, and leadership skills which we know will help him excel in his future. He has become self-aware and gained skill sets that have prepared him to become confident and dependable. At home, we can always count on Eli to follow through on household chores and schoolwork. He has also really grown in his walk with God and realizes that God has a great plan for his life. As his parents, we are grateful for what martial arts has contributed to his young life. We are so proud of Eli and all he has accomplished, and we cannot wait to see the great ways God will use him in the future!

MISS PEARL BURNS began her Martial Arts Journey in July 2020 - She earned her 1st Degree Black Belt in March 2025
It’s been a long journey of perseverance and dedication. Three and a half years ago, I would never have believed that I could progress as far as I have. I remember, as a white
belt, glancing upon the higher-ranking students with admiration and hoping that one day I would reach the same level of deft proficiency. I now find myself summiting the
achievement I once perceived as distant and insurmountable. The journey, though far from complete, has yielded rewards that have surpassed all my expectations, and the fruits of my patience and effort have become evident. I eagerly anticipate the challenges that lie ahead, and perhaps with greater enthusiasm, the opportunities to overcome them.
– Pearl Burns
Pearl, What a privilege it has been to watch you grow these last few years, in the dojang as well as outside of it. You have always had a fight inside you, and to see you hone and develop your "powers" for good has been a delight and joy. Thank you for being a patient coach, a formidable opponent, and for leading our family well on this journey. You have persevered and dug deep (noreul jeoeora, in Korean) to achieve this goal, and we can't wait to see what other mountains God leads you to conquer! 2 Timothy 1:7 "for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
–Mr. and Mrs. Burns
MR. SEBASTIAN RODRIGUES began his Martial Arts Journey in July 2018 - He earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in December 2022. - He earned his 2nd Degree Black Belt in March 2025
If you told me seven years ago that I would be where I am today in both my training and in life, I wouldn’t believe that we were talking about the same person. I’ve grown so much physically, mentally, and spiritually that it is like comparing black and white. I still remember my first day in Mrs. Jackson’s Dojang, I felt nervous and unexpectant, yet deep down I was determined. From then on, I showed up every day. After all, that is what Mrs. Jackson proved to us all along: That all it takes to be great is to show up and put in the work, the rest will take care of itself. Even though seven years went by in the same way that a dream does, (slow in the moment but swift looking back) it was in those years that I became the person I am today. Through joy and sorrow, grace and rage, rise and fall I became who I am. If it were not for the God who loved me when I had no love to give or the friends and family who pushed me forward when I felt the least I would not have made it to this day. It is because of my faith and because of my family that I can look back on my life fondly without regret and look forward with an eager anticipation for what God has in store. No matter where I end up in life, I will never forget the principles that were taught to me through this school, nor will I take for granted the effort Mrs. Jackson went through to make an impact on every student. This was truly a special part of my childhood, and I am exited to see where it leads next.
–Sebastian Rodriguez
Sebastian began his martial arts journey the summer before 6th grade! We watched him grow and mature tremendously throughout middle school and high school. He earned his 1st degree black belt a few years ago and now in a blink here he is testing for 2nd degree, the same year he also is graduating high school and journeying on to college with a plan for a nursing career. Sebastian is capable of anything he sets out to do because he does know how to persevere and dedicate time and energy into his interests and goals. He has a servants heart and desires to see others succeed right along with him. His martial arts journey has been such a special time of growth and friendships. We remain appreciative of the leadership provided by Mrs. Jackson as she truly has been a mentor to him in so many ways. May God bless Him as he embarks on his 2nd degree black belt journey and beyond!

MR. WYATT NORDIN began his Martial Arts Journey in August 2019 - He earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in November 2024
When I started at white belt, I was only 6 years old but I remember seeing the advanced students in the back of the classroom doing their techniques like it was easy. Now I can say for sure it’s not easy but it is worth it!
At yellow belt, I remember I was super excited because it felt like I had been white senior belt for forever! Then, the next thing I know, I’m a part of the advanced students getting ready for my black belt in the back of the classroom.
As a brown senior, I often get dizzy from all of the spinning kicks and sometimes I slip and fall down because my balance isn’t so good. But I am persevering and determined to get my black belt and not fall down during the test!
I want to thank Mrs. Jackson for putting up with me for so long, my brother Lukas for introducing me to martial arts, and my parents for paying for all of the classes and encouraging me to keep going! It’s safe to say that I will never regret learning martial arts through Higher Calling Martial Arts (HCMA).
– Wyatt Nordin
We remember when Wyatt started taking martial arts at the age of 6 years old. He was SO excited to be old enough to start taking at Timothy Ministry, and follow in his older brother, Lukas’, footsteps. He has never been mid about practicing and doing whatever it takes to get to the next belt and often practiced on his own in between classes, with a little help from his brother on his techniques.
As he has gotten older, martial arts has become more and more important to him and he has been very focused and motivated on achieving the coveted black belt. He has enjoyed taking instruction from Mrs. Jackson very much, and she has highly motivated him and encouraged him all along the way. He told
her recently that martial art is his absolute favorite sport of all that he has been involved in! We often see him working through his patterns throughout the day now on a regular basis.
Wyatt has a goal of becoming an assistant and applying to Storm Team once he meets the age requirements now that he has reached the level of black belt. Taking martial arts through HCMA has helped him to mature and grow in not only his skills but also his character, focus, perseverance, and dedication to achieve a goal that he has set for himself.
We are very proud of him for reaching this 6-year goal and can’t wait to see where the Lord takes him next in life! We know that the skills he has learned through martial arts will stay with him throughout his life. We, along with his older brother, Lukas, and other friends and family members in attendance, are so proud of him and will be cheering him on today!
– Mr. and Mrs. Nordin
MR. JAYLEN CARTER began his Martial Arts Journey in July 2020 - He earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in November 2024
I finally did it—I earned my 1st degree black belt! This is a HUGE deal for me, and I want to tell you why.
Getting to black belt wasn’t easy, but it was really fun. I had to practice a lot, learn tons of new moves, and keep pushing myself even when it got hard. I think I got stronger, more confident, and I learned that if I work hard, I can do big things. Plus, I met a bunch of cool people in my classes.
The best part was doing this with my dad! I think I actually inspired him to go for his black belt, which is really cool. (But, if I’m honest, I’m probably a little bit better—haha!).
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”— Philippians 4:13
–Jaylen Carter
Jaylen,
We couldn’t be prouder of the commitment, dedication, and perseverance you’ve shown on your martial arts journey. Your unwavering focus over the past four years has inspired us all to value lifelong learning and to approach new challenges with humility and determination. Your competitive spirit has even helped to sharpen Dad’s martial arts skills and journey, reminding us that “as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17). Congratulations on achieving your first-degree black belt!

MR. JAY CARTER began his Martial Arts Journey in July 2020 - He earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in November 2024
Throughout my journey to achieve a black belt, I have no doubt it was the Lord who carried me through. Balancing kids’ schedules, work travel, life’s demands, and even the inevitable aches and pains of age (lol)—it took true perseverance and an unbreakable spirit to keep going. Yet, the most rewarding part has been accomplishing this alongside my “mini-me,” Jaylen. Watching Jaylen mature over the past four years, while encouraging me to keep pushing has been a privilege.
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17) perfectly sums up our journey.
– Jay Carter
Jay, We are so incredibly proud of you! Reaching the black belt level is an extraordinary achievement, and we can only imagine the strength, determination, and countless hours
you’ve invested in reaching this goal. Watching you commit yourself to the art, through every challenge, every practice, and every test, has been truly inspiring.
You’ve shown us what discipline, patience, and resilience look like. You’ve pushed through even on the toughest days, and now here you are—a black belt. This is a testament not only to your skill but also to your character. You embody everything a true martial artist should be, both on and off the mat.
Congratulations, you deserve every bit of this accomplishment. We know this is just the beginning of what you’ll achieve in life, and we can’t wait to see what comes next.
Love, Chanel, Taylor & Kennedy
MISS LAURA ISHEE began her Martial Arts Journey in August 2021 - She earned her 1st Degree Black Belt in November 2024
My journey in martial arts started in the fall semester of 2021. I was 11 years old and had always wanted to do martial arts. I went to other places but only felt like it was the one until I came here. My brother and I started the semester, and I still remember the first day you walked in. You felt like you'd never be as good as the black belts until you met them. All the black belts, high schoolers, and other white belts were so nice and welcoming that you always felt included.
I started Storm Team when I was 13 years old and a green belt. I loved that wearing this uniform meant you were part of a team and a role model for the younger kids. I remember walking into class with my new uniform, and ever since then, I've felt like a part of their team.
Shortly after, I started and became an assistant instructor, which meant I would be relied on to call tests and be a figure of authority to young kids. I've learned throughout my time in martial arts and being a part of Storm and Assistant Instructor that leadership is not acting or being higher than someone else. It means leading and showing the way for the future martial artists who are the white belts in front of you. Being a leader means being someone you can go to for questions, but most of all, leaders need humidity. As the students grow, you grow with them, and knowing when you are wrong and fixing your mistakes, all of these things and more, is what it takes to be a good leader.
These are all the things that I've learned from Mrs. Jackson and my parents, to sum up my story. My life has improved so much from martial arts. Everything I have learned has helped me in class and outside. I want to thank Mrs Jackson, the Storm Team, the Assistant instructors, my family, my parents, and God for making my goals and dreams come true.
– Miss Laura Ishee
Laura began pursuing martial arts about five years ago and was immediately committed to achieving her black belt. Since those first classes, she has joined Storm Team, become an Assistant Instructor, and assists in classes at Timothy Ministry. Participating in martial arts has given her confidence and determination. She hates to miss a class and wants to help whenever possible. We're so proud of her accomplishments and know that her time spent in martial arts will serve her well in the future. Congratulations, Laura, we love you!

MR. BENJAMIN MISHOE began his Martial Arts Journey in January 2022 - He earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in November 2024
I started my journey with martial arts in January of 2021. It was my first year at Timothy Ministry and I enrolled into martial arts for the second semester. Now three years later I am ready for black belt! I have had many highlights throughout these past years, including becoming a STORM team member, then a student assistant, assisting at Timothy Ministry, and doing my final color belt test in August. I especially love assisting in classes and leading. I like that I can help and encourage others who are working to achieve their own martial arts goals.
Higher Calling has also taught me many principles that I have applied to my life so I can be a better Christian. I have learned to not be hard on myself and have perseverance. I always look forward to coming to train with Mrs. Jackson. She has always been very helpful and encouraging. I know I will never forget these past three years of growth and accomplishment. I look forward to continuing with HCMA. I hope someday to become a head instructor.
– Mr. Benjamin Mishoe
Benjamin, We have seen your dedication, especially in the last year, as you’ve worked towards the goal of earning your black belt. We have seen your confidence grow and grow with each belt you earned. We enjoy watching you develop your leadership skills as an assistant instructor. We see you exhibit kindness, gentleness and strength as you help others around you in class. We see your respect and admiration for Mrs. Jackson. We are thankful for her godly example in your life. We are extremely proud of you and look forward to watching you achieve future goals with HCMA.
We love you! “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” I Corinthians 10:31

MRS. PERLA JACKSON began her Martial Arts Journey in August 2022 - She earned her 1st Degree Black Belt in November 2024
I remember my first day like it was yesterday. It’s mind blowing how fast time flew and seeing how far I’ve come to earn my first black belt. I didn’t think too much of it at first, but as I earned a new belt I knew I was determined to reach this goal.
Starting my martial arts journey was like stepping into a whole new world filled with excitement and challenges. I remember my first class, feeling nervous, but also excited as I had my white belt tight around my waist. Each lesson was a mix of sweat and laughter; from mastering basic stances to learning how to throw a proper punch, every small victory fueled my passion.
Those hours spent practicing patterns and drills were not just about earning my stripes; they taught me discipline and perseverance.
As I approached the final stretch before earning my black belt, the sense of community and friendship made the whole experience even more rewarding. I’m thankful for everyone who supported me and saw the potential I had as a martial artist.
– Mrs. Perla Jackson
Perla, What a journey this has been. I know you have heard us talk about how becoming a Black Belt is so much more than just techniques you can learn and perform. It is about continuing to grow in all areas of life and applying martial arts principles and lessons to activities in the dojang, but also outside of the dojang.
We have seen you grow in so many ways over the years. Your confidence has increased. You have gotten much stronger. Your balance and coordination has improved. We have seen you grow and put into practice our principles: Humility, Integrity, Gentleness,Perseverance, Self-Control, and Unbreakable Spirit into action both in and out of the dojang. Graduating from college, getting a new job, getting engaged and married! You have persevered through so many areas applying all of these principles!
We are so very proud of your accomplishments and - let’s face it - thrilled to have you as part of our HCMA family as well as our nuclear family!
Love you! Tony and Chris Jackson
MISS SOPHIA CHORNE began her Martial Arts Journey in September 2019 - She earned her 1st Degree Black Belt in August 2022. - She earned her 2nd Degree Black Belt in November 2024
I love martial arts. It has benefited me so much through the years. Sometimes, it can be hard either getting to class, or just to get motivated to put my dobak on. As you can see though, I pushed through those times and kept going. Doing this has helped me to become better with perseverance, patience, and other principles. Higher Calling has also helped me grow in emotional-regulation and self-control, which has aided in soothing my ADHD side. For me, Choi has been therapeutic. At some points, all I have wanted to do is martial arts because it has helped me so much. The attitude to always do my best and not give up has helped me outside of Choi as well.
After my first black belt test everything got more fun. It felt like I was a ninja! The techniques got more difficult, however mastering them made me feel capable and confident. I appreciate the support my parents, family, and friends have given me through the years. The Jacksons have been such a lovely family to get to know. Summed up, martial arts has been a marvelous journey that has helped me in more ways than one.
God bless! Miss Sophia Chorne
When we moved to Woodstock in June of 2019 I asked Sophie if there was any activity she wanted to try. Without any hesitation, she answered confidently, “I want to learn self defense and martial arts.” I was hoping to get her into an activity to grow community and keep her busy. She has received all that plus so much more! It has been a leading part of her life since that first summer when she put on the white belt. Her interest and motivation never seem to waiver. What a blessing it has been to watch her grow in her abilities and confidence as she sets her sights on conquering her 2nd degree Black Belt. We are so proud of you, Sophie! We hope to watch you continue to surpass your own expectations and grow in strength and virtue.
We love you! Mr. & Mrs. Chorne
MR. ISAAC MORI began his Martial Arts Journey in January 2016 - He earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in June 2024
Where do start? Higher Calling Martial Arts has given me the ability to highlight characteristics of mine that I would not have been able to do otherwise. It’s given me something to always look forwards to, and has been able to shape my physical and mental performances. Humility, diligence, and perseverance were all key in pursuing this achievement of mine.
Looking back, I’ve really always had a love for martial arts - the style, concepts it introduced, and the fact that it was firmly rooted in Christian beliefs. I always found it so fulfilling, and to be honest one of the reasons I wanted to get involved was so that I could become a ninja someday. I’ve later come to realize that it was undoubtedly the Lord calling me to help lead in this area so that I might share my knowledge with others around me. Never would I have thought that it would teach me so many important lessons along the way, while also obtaining a Christ oriented state of mind.
I’ve always found learning from Mrs Jackson extremely cohesive and comprehensible because she’s just really good at her job. For instance, explaining how particular techniques can be applied in real life situations has been really beneficial. I think her influence has given me the ability to pursue this dream of mine. This journey has not only become a source of enjoyment, a hobby, a workout, a challenge, and a spiritual motivation, but most importantly part of who I am and who I’ve become. I’m so extremely thrilled to see what the Lord has in store for me in the near future and for this school.
- Mr. Isaac Mori
Isaac has been a part of Higher Calling Martial arts for about 8 years. It has always been something that he has thoroughly enjoyed and he has always been excited to move up to the next belt color. I would say, though, in the last 3 years he has really started to pursue it with his whole heart. He has been highly motivated to earn his black
belt and has even asked to take advanced classes on his own and practices in his spare time. He loves assisting Mrs. Jackson and helping and encouraging others to try their best. He even encourages his brother, who is also at part of Higher Calling, at home. We are so proud to see the persistence and diligence that Isaac has shown to pursue his black belt and it is an achievement that he has truly worked hard for!
- Mr. & Mrs. Mori
MISS NOELIA RODRIGUEZ began her Martial Arts Journey in June 2020 - She earned her 1st Degree Black Belt in June 2024
Through my journey in reaching my black belt I have learned and grown in many ways. I started martial arts in the summer of 2021. Over time as I climbed through each rank on the ladder; I grew to love Martial Arts.
Learning all the techniques and patterns has greatly improved my coordination and strength. I have learned to persevere through struggles in class or with hardships faced outside of class.
I have had many great experiences through martial arts, however, my favorite experience has been all the friendships I have built through it. The ability to come together to share wisdom and have fun learning in class, knowing that Mrs. Jackson puts a lot of effort into each student, has made the experience very rewarding.
I am thankful I have had Martial Arts to build me up and I hope it continues to impact my life for many years to come.
– Noelia Rodriguez
Noelia,
Your dad, brothers, and I are immensely proud of you and the dedication and determination that you have shown throughout your martial arts journey. From an early age you enjoyed dancing from ballet to tap. Once that chapter ended for you, you found a new love in martial arts and I have to say I love watching you perform. You are fierce and a force to be reckoned with. As you head towards your first degree black belt, I can't help but think back on the journey you have had to get here. From middle school to high school you have grown so much and have become a lovely young lady who has the kindest heart, a creative spirit, an intelligent mind, strength from within, and a love for the Lord. We can't wait to see you achieve this next step and beyond.
"The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face to shine upon you;, the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace." Numbers 6:24-26

I started Martial Arts in Jan 2020. My goals set were and are to memorize all my punches, kicks, patterns, and speed drills correctly. Also, one of my goals set was to get to black belt. My favorite punch is an upward punch, my favorite kick is a front kick, my favorite pattern is red senior pattern, my favorite strike is a reverse knife hand strike, and my favorite speed drill is orange senior speed drill. Martial arts has made me stronger, has made me more confident, and has helped me have perseverance.

MISS PENNY ROSENBAUM began her Martial Arts Journey in August 2020 - She earned her 1st Degree Black Belt in March 2024
When I first started martial arts, it was for fun and something to do during the pandemic. As I got older, and learned more about the world, I realized that being able to protect myself was going to be a valuable skill. Now, I do it because I love it and I want to help others in their journeys. I never thought I would develop so many friendships through HCMA. I met my two best friends in the world and gained so many other friends with other classmates. They are no longer just classmates, they feel like family. Little me did not expect to get to here and actually achieve my dream of having a black belt. It certainly wasn’t easy along the way. With a broken foot and breathing difficulties, it was certainly tricky to make it this far. But here I am ready to earn my black belt.
– Miss Penelope Rosenbaum
MRS. SARAH ROSENBAUM began her Martial Arts Journey at the age of 10, took a break and began in 2021 with HCMA - She earned her 1st Degree Black Belt in March 2024
Earning my black belt has been a dream of mine since I was a child. I took martial arts when we lived in New Hampshire when I was 10. When we moved to Atlanta, we weren't able to find a school that was a good fit for us, so we had to stop training. I never thought I'd get back into it. Fast forward to 2020, my kids decided to take up Martial Arts through Timothy Ministry. Watching them train reignited that fire in me, and I decided to join in the fun. Starting over at a white belt was very humbling, and I felt very silly at first, but I quickly fell back in love with martial arts. A black belt felt really far away at that point, but the years went by quickly!
Getting to train with my daughter through the ranks has been so fun! We've always enjoyed spending time together and this has been a fun activity for us to share. And today all that is paying off as we earn our black belts together! That makes it even more special for me. We even inspired both my boys and my husband to begin classes!
It hasn't come without challenges though. My 40 year old body does not move the way my 10 year old body did. Between sore muscles, achy joints, and a knee injury, I've had to push through some tough days and make accommodations on others. I've also had to break a lot of habits that I had developed when I first started martial arts! Muscle memory is a powerful thing! (Don't twist your wrist!)
I am so incredibly grateful to Mrs. Jackson for encouraging, pushing, and leading me through this journey, as well as protecting me from myself sometimes. HCMA is a special organization and I am proud to be a part of it. The friends I have made and all the hard work has been 100% worth it. As I look to the future, I'm excited for the things to come as I continue to work on myself and my training. I can now check "earn black belt" off of my bucket list and replace it with "earn 2nd degree black belt" :-)

MR. CAIDEN CALVIN began his Martial Arts Journey in 2014 and earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in March 2021 - He earned his 2nd Degree Black Belt in March 2024
I started training with Mrs Jackson when I was blank years old. I remember going to my older siblings' classes not being old enough to participate but I was allowed to punch the wave masters after class. Some things I have enjoyed have been learning new techniques and patterns. One of the challenges I have faced in martial arts has been remembering patterns; they have always required more effort from me.
– Mr. Caiden Calvin
It has been very exciting to see Caiden transition from participating in martial arts as a family activity to taking ownership of his own goals. He has worked hard over the years setting goals, working towards those goals and achieving those goals. It has been a sweet journey watching him grow, learn and excel. We are thankful for the dedication and discipline Caiden has shown as he continues his journey. May God continue to bless you Caiden. We love you! We are especially thankful for Mrs. Jackson and the leadership she has provided. It has been an honor to have our children train under her over the years.

MISS ELENA HAMRICK began her Martial Arts Journey in October 2016 - She earned her 1st Degree Black Belt in March 2024
I am who I am today because of martial arts. My fifteen year old self, beginning to train for her second degree black belt after a global pandemic, would never have imagined being comfortable as a leader. She wouldn't have dreamed of becoming a Head Instructor. The final years of high school are a formative period for everyone; I am proud of how that time has formed me. Though before I felt isolated, I found a community among my students, assistants, and teachers. I learned to love leading and serving others. I gained self-awareness, and connected with my skills and techniques on a deeper level. I’ve grown into the use of my own strength in body, heart, mind, and soul. For that, I thank martial arts and the wonderful people of this school.
– Miss Elena Hamrick
Back in 2016, some homeschool friends invited us to try out a martial arts class. That trial class started a 3-year journey for the whole family to our first-degree black belts. Elena, your training and experience since then have led you through 3 years as an assistant instructor, and now, to the rank of head instructor. You're also earning a second-degree black belt just a few months before your high school graduation.
Elena, through these years of fun and hard work, we have been delighted to see you develop leadership skills, friendships, and a tremendous depth of maturity. You bring encouragement, cheer, and joy to those around you. We are incredibly proud of you and have been blessed to see the amazing young woman you have become. MR. JOHN MARK SOMERS began his Martial Arts Journey in August 2016 and earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in September 2021 - He earned his 2nd Degree Black Belt in March 2024
Before Higher Calling Martial Arts, I was Physically and Spiritually struggling in life from experiences of family loss and lack of physical activity.
Higher Calling Martial arts has helped me physically improve in flexibility and has allowed me to develop an overall incredibly strong spirit.
Throughout the 7 years of my training and experiences, i have met countless students whom have also learned numerous different principles and lessons of self-discipline from their classes. Almost every student has had an upbeat attitude every time I spoke with them when assisting me with techniques and defense drills.
HCMA has forever changed my life and has helped shape me into the leader I am today.
– Mr. John Mark Somers
Adrian Rogers once said, “I would rather stand alone in the light of truth than in the crowd filled with error.” John Mark Somers is a young man that stands as a strong believer in Jesus Christ and in high achievement. As his parents, we have watched him grow and mature into the fine young man he is today. John Mark’s seven-year journey from his white belt senior testing to earning his second degree black belt has been instrumental in promoting physical fitness and spiritual growth, while teaching him humility, discipline, perseverance, and character. John Mark, your future is extremely bright, and we could not be more proud of you. May God bless you as you stand tall for Him!

MR. GARRETT HUFFMAN began his Martial Arts Journey in August 2016 and earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in December 2021 - He earned his 2nd Degree Black Belt in March 2024
Martial arts has been a really awesome experience so far. I've met so many great people and I consider myself lucky to call some of them my friends. I will never forget the time I've spent in the Dojang, especially that one time I broke my foot on Isaac's elbow (thanks, man). I look forward to seeing what the future holds for me and everyone else at Higher Calling, and I can't believe it's already been four and a half years.
– Mr. Garrett Huffman
Garrett’s martial arts journey began at Timothy Ministry during his middle school years. He had tried several other sports and activities, but none he liked well enough to continue with beyond a year or two. When we got to Timothy and he found out some of his friends participated in martial arts and he decided he wanted to try it. As his parents, we were on board because it would give him a physical outlet and self-defense skills under Christian leadership. Garrett enjoyed training so much that he continued to participate, long after our season at Timothy was over.
Over the years of Garrett's martial arts training, his increasing proficiency has helped his confidence and his sense of achievement. He has become an assistant instructor and has grown in so many other ways on his journey. Mostly though, he has enjoyed the relationships he has developed with both peers and Mr. and Mrs. Jackson. We have seen Garrett’s sense of compassion for his fellow students demonstrated on multiple occasions, and we are so thankful for the positive influences the Jacksons have been in his life. We are extremely proud and grateful for our son, more than he will ever know.

MR. ALEX PUELLO began his Martial Arts Journey in August 2010 and earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in June 2017. He earned his 2nd Degree Black Belt in September 21. - He earned his 3rd Degree Black Belt in March 2024
At a young age I was enrolled in martial arts with Mrs. Jackson at Timothy Ministry. My time spent training has always been enjoyable for its own sake, but the relationships I have built and the foundations that were set are the true reward for me. During my martial arts journey there have been seasons of apathy where I was discouraged from training. These times were caused by personal frustrations or circumstances that would draw my attention away from the aspects of martial arts that I loved. Thankfully Mrs. Jackson and the community she has built have always drawn me back in. The Attitude and disciplines learned in my training have gone on to ripple throughout my whole life.
– Mr. Alex Puello
We put Alex in martial arts when he was just a little guy. He started so that he would have something to keep him busy for an hour while his sisters took school classes at Timothy Ministry. We didn't yet know Mrs. Jackson or much about martial arts at all, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions ever!
I watched Alex focus, practice, & use repetition to master patterns week after week. His speed, strength, coordination and precision grew with each new belt. I loved that Mrs. Jackson taught respect & that these new moves could be used to protect himself and others. Being part of something bigger and at the same time being responsible for self and own actions was great training for life & home, as well.
Next steps were grown into and learned by example with both gentleness and strength, as well as special training for storm team & student assistant! Setting positive goals and persevering to accomplish them turned out to reveal progress, skills & positive ways to help and influence others.
I have SO enjoyed seeing Alex sharpen his skills & increase in self confidence. Thank you for setting a path for him to grow his overall health, physical endurance, mental focus, self control, moral standards, and respect for fellow humans. Though sometimes it might have felt like just something he did, as he progressed he grew to truly love martial arts. Today we are so excited to celebrate what he has accomplished! I believe he has risen to the challenge, well. We couldn't be more proud of him!!
This has been a very positive atmosphere of discipline, fun & community for him and continues to be a place he feels at home.
